Part of the marble Gothic Series, The Pit and the Pendulum is a Bourbon barrel aged bretted Portent of Usher, their recent Russian Imperial Stout. It's packaged in a plain brown bottle free of any traditional labels with a beautifully designed tag attached with ribbon to the bottle neck.
Pouring a pitch black, the viscous liquid is topped with a shallow beige head. The nose is full of Bourbon character at first with notes of vanilla and oak leading. There's the unique sour fruit and slight funkiness that the Brettanomyces brings too.
Incredibly smooth in the mouth with rich, decadent chocolate followed by the warming woody Bourbon flavours of oak and vanilla. Again, the sour fruit flavours come to the forefront before the dry, chocolatey finish.
Marble beers have good distribution throughout the UK and can easily be found in most independent bottle shops. They do have an online shop where their beers can be purchased too. Many of their new beers are one-off batches that may not be available unless brewed again.
All of their current beer range is vegan-friendly, as no isinglass finings are used at all.
This beer is suitable for vegans at the time of writing (April 2017).
