Black IPAs are also known as Cascadian Dark Ales and are a relatively new style of beer. They can be seen as a combination of a stout and IPA taking some of the best characteristics from each. Beers in this style will range from dark brown to a pitch black. They have plenty of malt presence with a moderate amount of roasted flavours. However, they will not usually contain the full on roasted notes of a stout. They use brewed with more hops than you would find in a porter and are often generously hopped with American varieties.
This is a great hybrid style that will befuddle your senses. When poured they look like a stout and a quick whiff will reveal roasted notes of coffee and dark chcolate. As the aroma develops fruity, citrus notes move forward. The same flavours can be found in the taste with waves of dark chocolate and coffee quickly being succeeded by citrus fruits.
