St Austell Brewery's new stout, Mena Dhu, boasts six different malts among the other ingredients. As dark as the night sky, the aroma is mellow with hints of smoke.
The mouthfeel is surprisingly light with some delicate flavours. Dark chocolate, liquorice and toast all make their presence felt. The finish is warming, with the addition of Liquorice Root Powder adding to the heat.
Mena Dhu is very moreish and at only 4.5% it isn't as heavy as you would expect a Stout to be. The long list of malts does create a complex taste, but you need to be patient in order to unravel all the intricacies of this beer.
It's a great addition to the St Austell range of bottled beers that is infinitely versatile; whether sat by a roaring fire or served lightly chilled during the summer months. Hopefully we'll see this grace supermarket shelves further around the country.
At the time of writing Mena Dhu is not available in many locations outside of Cornwall. The best place to purchase bottles is from the St Austell Brewery Online Shop.
All St Austell bottled, canned (Tribute 500ml and Korev 330ml) and kegged beers are clarified by filtration, therefore they do not contain any added isinglass finings. St Austell bottled, canned and kegged beers may therefore be consumed by vegetarians and vegans. No other animal derived ingredients or process aids are used in the production of St Austell Brewery beers.
This beer is suitable for vegans at the time of writing (October 2016).
