You know you’re in for something special when the label describes it as an 'oxymoronic IPA as hoppy as a bucketful of frogs'. Infra Red straddles a line between both light and hoppy, and dark and malty. More of an amber ale than an IPA, there are a colossal amount of hops in here along with a monumental measure of crystal malt. It pairs well with rich, dark, spicy tomato based stews and darker Indian dishes like Rogan Josh, so Infra Red makes an ideal partner to pizza with a spicy topping!
Infra Red pours a deep ruby red and unleashes its aroma of toffee, resinous pine and citrus. It’s all toffee and caramel up front leading to earthy orange and a hit of grapefruit. The middle is peppery with whispers of roast parsnips, even dark chocolate. This leads to a long lasting bitter finish. Infra Red is bottle-conditioned meaning additional yeast is added to the bottle to continue its work which is evident in the complex flavour. Infra Red is one of three Hardknott beers now stocked by Morrisons; so popular they’ve had to double their brewing capacity!
Hardknott Brewery do not use any animal products in their bottle or keg beers. However, their cask beer - AKA "Real Ale" - does contain isinglass. Their bottle and keg beers are dropped bright in tank, and are only very roughly filtered. There might be a small amount of sediment in the bottle, but this is kept to a minimum.
This beer is suitable for vegans at the time of writing (October 2016).
