Taste: | Roasted Malts, Dark Chocolate, Coffee, Grapefruit |
St Austell's Proper Black is the Black IPA version of their popular Proper Job. The original recipe has roasted malts added for the darker colour and hints of dark chocolate and coffee.
Proper Black pours a near pitch black with a mocha head that quickly dissipates showing the relatively low carbonation. The nose is full of roasted malts with some citrus coming through towards the end.
The taste is more roasty than expected, almost dominating. The pithy grapefruit citrus of the original Proper Job is there, but its the dark chocolate and coffee that are most prominent. More citrus flavours appear the longer it sits in the glass.
For a Black IPA, sadly the balance is too far towards the roasted malts. It would be interesting to see more hops coming through in the next iteration of Proper Black. It's the pithy grapefruit flavours from Proper Job that seem to be missing at the moment.
St Austell Brewery have partnered with supermarket giant Tesco in an exclusive deal to sell its first black IPA. The 500ml bottle is availble to purchase in most larger stores at a RRP of £1.99.
All St Austell bottled, canned (Tribute 500ml and Korev 330ml) and kegged beers are clarified by filtration, therefore they do not contain any added isinglass finings. St Austell bottled, canned and kegged beers may therefore be consumed by vegetarians and vegans. No other animal derived ingredients or process aids are used in the production of St Austell Brewery beers.
This beer is suitable for vegans at the time of writing (July 2016).
