The traditional Pilsner is a type of pale lager that boasts sharp bitterness and a moderately strong alcohol level. The unique qualities of a Pilsner varies depending on the country of origin. Czech Pilsners are golden in colour with a large foamy head and light flavour. German Pilsners are lighter in colour, more straw like, with a bitter or earthy taste. European Pilsners are usually sweeter in taste and are often brewed using alternatives to malted barley.
As a style, Pilsners are wonderfully flexible when it comes to food. Their bitterness, effervescence and earthy notes allow them to pair with many food styles from simple vegan sausages to flavourful Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, Jamaican and Mexican.
