Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Märzen is brewed in accordance with the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516. The history of this brewery is apparent from the moment you see the bottle adorned with an old manuscript label. When the malt for this beer is dried a beechwood log fire underneath the kiln heats the air, and this gives the malt its distinctive smoky flavour. Not for the fainthearted, this beer is full of huge smoky aromas and a slightly burnt taste reminiscent of Lapsang Souchong tea. You're unlikely to find this beer in any supermarkets, but its classic status means that you will be able to locate it in all good independent bottle shops as well as online.
There are two types of fining at Schlenkerla: Lautering (the filtering after mashing) is done just by natural gravity through the spelt of the grain. After lagering diatomic earth is used for filtration. The Schlenkerla Fastenbier (lentbeer), the Schlenkerla Kräusen and the Schlenkerla smoked wheat beer are unfiltered.
This beer is suitable for vegans at the time of writing (November 2016).
