For those unfamiliar with the barley wine style, the lack of head and carbonation may come as a surprise. This beer is essentially flat and it's meant to be like that.
Three Chimps is a deep, dark brown with crimson highlights. The aroma is delightfully sweet and sugary with treacle, black molasses and golden syrup all present. Dried, dark fruits of raisins, plums and prunes and also be found.
Thick and smooth in the mouth, Three Chimps feels like liquid treacle. There's an immediate taste of boozy, stewed plums and rum soak sultanas. Liquorice flavours create some warmth and depth to this American-style barley wine. The molasses reappears towards the end adding a sweet sign-off to this superb brew.
Brass Castle beers are well distributed throughout the country, especially around the Yorkshire area. You can purchase bottles, cans, bag-in-boxes and mini-kegs direct from the Brass Castle website.
Brass Castle do not use any animal-derived products in brewing their beers.
