Moor Beer Co originally started in 1996 on a former dairy farm in the Levels and Moors area of Somerset. Having grown rapidly since Justin and Maryann Hawke took over the company, the brewery now resides in Bristol, a short walk from Temple Meads station. Often seen as pioneers of unfined, natural beers, Moor Beer Co are regarded as one of the top breweries in the UK.
Stout comes beautifully presented in their signature large 660ml bombers. The majority of Moor beers, including this, are moving into cans, with the exception of Old Freddy Walker, Benny Havens and Fusion. The label wonderfully details the need to brew a beer that is straight-forward and simple, where much craft beer can get consumed with the latest trends and provocative marketing.
Pouring jet black, there's a thin, but lasting tan head throughout. Red fruits hit the nose first with notes of freshly picked redcurrants and raspberries. Some mellow, milky coffee follows the fruit. The taste is decadent dark chocolate and mocha with some delicate roasted coffee flavours.
The finish is low in bitterness with more red fruit character coming through. Where other stouts indulge in bitter roastedness, the mouthfeel here is unusually smooth and silky.
Moor Beer are widely distributed throughout the UK. Their cans and bottles are available fresh from the Brewery Tap or can be purchased online through EeBria.
Moor Beer Co’s unfined ‘natural’ beers do not contain isinglass cask finings.
This beer is suitable for vegans at the time of writing (March 2016).
